Same model, two sites
Of 5,854 models posted once on each site, the free Printables copy shows more downloads for 4,422 and the MakerWorld copy for 1,373. Among the 2,416 pairs where both copies went up in 2025 or later, it's 1,727 against 649.
Filamentors, November 2026
Plenty of models go up on both MakerWorld and Printables. We matched 5,854 of them in our sample, one copy on each site, and in 4,422 of those pairs the Printables copy has more downloads. The MakerWorld copy wins 1,373 times. 59 come out dead even. The Printables copy is often the older one, so we also looked at the 2,416 pairs where both copies went up in 2025 or later: Printables still shows more downloads in 1,727 of them, and MakerWorld in 649.
That's a lopsided split. Before reading anything into it, know that the two sites don't count a download the same way.
We studied 1,004,137 public models from MakerWorld and Printables, two of the biggest sites for sharing 3D printing files: 327,759 from MakerWorld and 676,378 from Printables. Every number here describes those models, not every model ever posted.
A pair here is one model posted once on each site, with the same title and the same creator name. We only count pairs where the Printables copy is free, since Printables hides downloads on paid models, and where both copies have been up at least 90 days. A title posted more than once on either site is left out.
Which copy shows more
Across those 5,854 pairs, Printables shows more downloads in 75.5% of them. We're comparing the two copies of one model, so the creator and the title are the same.
The counting isn't. Both sites count a download once per person per model, but MakerWorld only counts people who are logged in. Printables also counts people who aren't. That tilts every pair toward Printables before anything else comes into it, and we can't say how much of the split it explains.
Chart 1
Models posted on both sites
Of the 5,854 models we found on both sites, one copy on each and both at least 90 days old, Printables shows more downloads for 4,422 and MakerWorld for 1,373. Printables counts free models only.
Matched by identical title and creator name, one copy on each site, within our sample; both copies at least 90 days old. Printables counts are free models only.

Newer pairs only
Some Printables copies are older than their MakerWorld twins, and an older copy has had more time to collect downloads. Cute Mini Octopus is one: the Printables copy went up in 2022, the MakerWorld one in 2023.
So we looked only at pairs where both copies went up in 2025 or later, still with both at least 90 days old. There are 2,416. The Printables copy still shows more downloads in 1,727 of them, 71.5%, against 649 for MakerWorld. So the gap isn't just older Printables copies. The counting rule above still applies.
The exceptions
Plenty of pairs go the other way, or lean much harder. Cascade card wallet (Print-in-place) has 142,472 downloads on Printables and 6,944 on MakerWorld. 4 Ring Gyro Fidget goes the other way hard: 117,782 on MakerWorld, 602 on Printables.
Nothing here proves a second copy adds downloads you wouldn't otherwise get. This data shows where the downloads landed. It can't show why. It does show that one model can land very differently on each site. Posting to both costs a few minutes, and posting to one means you never find out which kind of model yours is.
