The Million Model Report

What a top listing looks like

MakerWorld models in the top 1% by downloads have a median of 3 print profiles and 11 tags. The typical one has 1 profile and 6 tags.

Filamentors, November 2026

Open a model in MakerWorld's top 1% and the listing looks busier than most. It has a median of 4 photos, 11 tags and a 757-character description. The median MakerWorld model has 3 photos, 6 tags and 299 characters.

Getting into that top 1% takes 2,370 downloads. Here's what those listings have that the rest mostly don't, on MakerWorld and then on Printables. Each site is set against itself.

We studied 1,004,137 public models from MakerWorld and Printables, two of the biggest sites for sharing 3D printing files: 327,759 from MakerWorld and 676,378 from Printables. Every number here describes those models, not every model ever posted.

Profiles, tags and descriptions

On MakerWorld the biggest gap is print profiles. The top 1% has a median of 3, and 83.5% of those models have two or more. Across all models it's 14.9%. Tags nearly double, from 6 to 11. The description is 2.5 times as long.

Video doesn't follow the pattern. 1.4% of top MakerWorld models have one, a hair under the 1.8% of all models. Assembly guides are rare everywhere, 1.0% of models and 3.5% of the top.

On Printables the top 1% of free models starts at 2,006 downloads, and the same pattern shows up inside the site. Free models in its top 1% have a median of 4 photos against 2, 6 tags against 4, and 564 characters of description against 263. Photos

On MakerWorld, 48.1% of models show two photos or fewer. That count is the design gallery only, so photos people post with their print profiles aren't in it. Listings with 10 or more photos are 3.5% of MakerWorld models and 10.4% of its top 1%.

On Printables, 53.2% of free models show two photos or fewer. Listings with 10 or more are 3.6% of free models and 11.1% of the top 1%. The two sites count photos differently, so each one is only set against itself.

None of this proves a longer description earns downloads. These are plain medians. A creator who writes a long description probably also shoots more photos and slices more profiles, and may already have followers waiting. The numbers here can't pull those apart. Comparing each creator's own models gets closer to what a single listing feature goes with.

But if you're looking at a listing with one photo and a one-line description, you're looking at the kind of listing the top 1% almost never has.
