Paying for models

Almost every model in our sample is free. Of the 676,378 Printables models we studied, 11,604 are paid or members-only today, 1.7% of the lot. MakerWorld barely has the idea at all: 62 of its 327,759 models in our sample carry a paid flag.

Money still finds its way in. On Printables it's a price on the model. On MakerWorld it's a subscription to the creator.

We studied 1,004,137 public models from MakerWorld and Printables, two of the biggest sites for sharing 3D printing files: 327,759 from MakerWorld and 676,378 from Printables. Every number here describes those models, not every model ever posted.

Paid models on Printables

Before 2023, paid models barely registered. 0.02% of the Printables models published in 2022 are paid today. Then it took off: 1.12% of 2023's uploads, 1.51% of 2024's, 2.28% of 2025's, and 3.52% so far in 2026. That last figure is 4,543 models.

All of these are today's status. 49 models published from 2019 to 2022 are paid now, so some went paid after they launched. The chart counts how many models from each year are paid today. How many launched with a price, we can't tell.

5,562 of the paid models show a store price. The median is 6, and the most common price is a flat 5, on 1,792 models. Printables doesn't say which currency, so neither do we.

Views on paid models

Printables hides download counts on paid models, so downloads can't tell us how they do. Views can. And since paid models skew young, the fair comparison is paid against free from the same publish year.

Paid loses in every year. Paid models from 2023 have a median of 246 views, against 488 for free ones. In 2024 it's 266.5 against 309, and for this year's uploads 26 against 60.

That doesn't prove a price scares people off. The people who charge may simply make different kinds of models. What it does mean is that a paid model on Printables starts with fewer eyes on it than a free one posted the same year, and the sale has to come out of that smaller crowd.

Subscriptions on MakerWorld

MakerWorld's version is a paid subscription to a creator. Creators who offer one made 15.0% of the models we studied, and those models hold 39.5% of the downloads.

Holding age steady, at six months to two years old, the gap stays about the same: 15.4% of the models, 39.5% of the downloads. The median model from a creator with subscriptions has 54 downloads, against 19 for everyone else.

Again, that's a link. It doesn't tell you to start a subscription. Creators with a following are the ones who can sell subscriptions in the first place.

Their share of new uploads is shrinking, too. Subscription creators posted 19.2% of the MakerWorld models published in 2023 and 13.0% of those so far in 2026. Everyone else is uploading faster.
