Categories that punch above their weight

Toys pull more than their weight on both sites. Toys & Games makes up 10.0% of the MakerWorld models we studied and collects 17.4% of their downloads. On Printables the category is 10.0% of all the models we studied and gets 16.9% of the downloads of free models. In our sample, no other category gains as much on either site.

If you're choosing what to design next, that's the gap worth knowing about: categories whose share of downloads is bigger than their share of uploads. It measures where downloads went, not what people wanted and couldn't find.

On Printables the two shares cover different models. The upload share counts every model, paid or free. The download share counts free models only, since paid ones hide their downloads.

We studied 1,004,137 public models from MakerWorld and Printables, two of the biggest sites for sharing 3D printing files: 327,759 from MakerWorld and 676,378 from Printables. Every number here describes those models, not every model ever posted.

The big categories

On MakerWorld, Art gives up the most in our sample. It's 13.0% of uploads and gets 7.2% of downloads. Generative 3D Model is 5.6% of uploads and gets 1.9%.

On Printables, Household gives up the most in our sample: 20.7% of uploads, 17.1% of free-model downloads. It's a huge category that people do download from. There's just a lot of it.

These shares count every download a model has ever had, so old categories get a head start. Count only models published in 2025 and toys still come out ahead: 9.2% of those uploads and 17.3% of their downloads on MakerWorld, 10.5% and 17.4% on Printables.

Small subcategories

Among subcategories that hold under 1% of a site's uploads, a few have far higher medians than the site as a whole. On Printables, Building Toys is 0.9% of uploads, and its free models published in 2025 have a median of 88 downloads. Every free 2025 Printables model together has a median of 26.

MakerWorld's list is led by Cosplay Weapons, at 55 downloads for the median 2025 model, against 27 for the site. Its largest subcategory, Decor, sits at 27, right on the site median. In our sample, the crowded subcategory gets the ordinary result.

Tags

Tags work the same way. Take the 12 tags used most on both sites. On MakerWorld, toy has the highest median of the group in our sample, 61 downloads for a 2025 model, and christmas the lowest, at 18. On Printables, among free models, cute leads at 68 and holder trails at 24.

The same tag can land on opposite sides of the middle. On MakerWorld, holder has a median of 45, well above the site's 27. On Printables it's 24, just under that site's 26. Decor beats its site's median on both. So check the site you're posting to before you copy a tag list from the other one.
