MakerLab Now Charges Credits on Generation

If you use MakerLab’s AI tools on MakerWorld, the way you pay for them changed this summer. In late May 2026, MakerWorld posted a MakerLab Credit Billing Rule Adjustment Preview, and the new rules started rolling out on June 25, 2026. Credits are now taken when you generate, free monthly credits are gone, and MakerWorld points buy fewer credits than before. Here is where things stand on November 3, 2026, plus one deadline to know about.

Credits Are Charged on Generation

Before the change, tools like Image to 3D only took credits when you exported a model. You could generate as many tries as you wanted and pay a small amount for the one you kept. Now some of the AI tools charge when the generation starts, whether you export the result or not, and every regeneration is charged again. According to 3Druck, this only applies to tools that use paid outside AI services. FilamentPicks names Image to 3D and Make My Statue as examples.

MakerWorld was open about why. Its preview says charging on export could no longer support how much people were generating, and 3Druck reports MakerWorld said MakerLab had been subsidized since launch, which was not sustainable. MakerWorld’s credits guide even asks “Is this a price increase?” and answers “Yes”. Some tools now cost a lot more per generation, so the same balance gets you fewer tries.

Free Monthly Credits Are Gone

MakerLab used to give every account free credits each month. MakerWorld’s own app text said each month included 20 free credits, reset on the 1st. Those are now replaced by a set number of free trial uses for each tool, tied to your account. The trials do not reset every month, and once you use them up they are gone. Any free monthly credits you had left were cleared when the new rules reached your account, and they did not turn into points. When a tool has trial uses left, MakerLab uses those first.

The good news is that MakerWorld’s own parametric generators, like Make My Sign and the lithophane maker, are still free. If a paid generation fails, MakerWorld’s FAQ says the credits are returned to your account. A generation that works but that you do not like is not refunded.

Points to Credits: 80 Points for 600 Credits

This is the part that matters most if you earn points. The old rate was 1 point for 10 credits. That rate is gone, and the new option is 80 points for 600 credits, or 7.5 credits per point. On paper, the same 80 points used to get you 800 credits, so you now get 25% fewer credits for your points. You can also buy credits with cash now, and MakerWorld’s FAQ says that buying or redeeming points are the two main ways to get credits. Credits you buy or redeem do not expire.

Is it worth spending points on credits? That depends on what else you would do with them. Creators on the Bambu Lab forum report that a $40 Bambu gift card costs 490 points in the US, which puts 80 points at about $6.50 in store credit. If you would rather have filament or parts, you can check what your points are worth with our MakerWorld Points Calculator. Be sure to also read our post on the 2026 MakerWorld points changes, since points are harder to earn than they used to be.

Refund Old Credits Before December 31

If you traded points for credits under the old 1 to 10 rate and still have some left, you can turn them back into points. MakerWorld’s credit page says eligible credits from the old policy can be refunded to points before December 31, 2026, 24:00 UTC. A few things to know:

  • Refunds use the original exchange rate, so 10 unused credits give back 1 point. Anything under 1 point is not refunded.
  • Free credits MakerWorld gave you are counted as used first, so the refund only covers credits you actually paid points for.
  • Credits from the new 80 for 600 option cannot be refunded.
  • MakerWorld says refunds take 2 to 3 business days, and using credits during that time can change the amount.

Our advice is simple. If you plan to keep using MakerLab, keep your old credits, since they were bought at the better rate. If you do not, request the refund before the deadline and put those points toward a gift card instead.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Credits

  • Use your free trials first. Every account gets a few, and they are applied automatically.
  • Pick your image carefully. Since every try costs credits now, a clean photo with a plain background is a great way to avoid paying for redos.
  • Check the cost before you click. MakerLab shows the credit cost for each tool, and it changes between AI engines.
  • Try the free generators. For signs, vases, lithophanes and other simple models, the parametric tools cost nothing.

All in all, MakerLab is no longer a free toy. Generating costs credits, credits cost more points, and the free monthly allowance is gone. If you are a creator, your points probably go further as a gift card than as credits. For more on how points work, check out our MakerWorld points guide!
